Arua, Uganda. Police in Arua are singing the praises of a sex worker in Arua town who almost single handedly wrestled an armed an errant UPDF soldier to the ground and disarmed him.
Florence Angaika, a sex worker at P7 which is a brothel in Prisons Ward in Arua town, told the police that she became suspicious when the soldier, Shaban Arike, knocked at her door at dawn on Sunday morning. Angaika said the soldier claimed that he had left his bicycle in her room and demanded for its return.
Sensing danger, Angaika raised an alarm attracting Special Police Constables who were on patrol. Romano Okuja, the Arua Criminal Investigations Officer, says Angaika took the soldier head-on and wrestled him to the ground. With the help of the Special Police Constables, she disarmed Arike and caused his arrest. Officer Okuja says Arike who is from the Bondo-based 11th Battalion was found in possession of a gun with 30 rounds of ammunition and a bullet ready for firing in its chamber.
Arike was detained at Arua Police Station where is awaiting referral to the th Brigade disciplinary committee. The soldier has a criminal background. He was arrested on November 9th at Arivu near Bondo for trespassing on a kraal with an intention to steal cattle. He was released on bond and expected to report to Arivu police post on Monday. The police are encouraging civilians to become extra vigilant about their safety as the Christmas festive season draws near.
